Explore Year 6. Session 6. Week 3.

What do pool noodles, sound effects, and strawberry DNA have in common? They were all part of the learning adventure in Explore Studio in week 4!

QUEST
Explore biologists dove into the microscopic world as they extracted DNA from strawberries—an experiment that sparked awe and wonder. With pipettes and patience, they watched the invisible become visible. Then they brought structure to the science by teaming up to build a giant DNA model using pool noodles. Twisting, turning, and connecting each base pair, Explorers quite literally brought the double helix to life.

To deepen their understanding and connect with a real-life scientist, learners had the incredible opportunity to meet UT Professor Tanya Paull, a Hero in Biology. She generously shared her Hero’s Journey—from her early curiosity about the molecular world to the challenges and breakthroughs of leading a research lab.

ART
Creativity took center stage as Explorers partnered with Discoverers to finalize their original radio play productions. Scripts were polished, costumes assembled, and sound effects rehearsed with care and plenty of laughter.

WRITERS’ WORKSHOP
During Writers’ Workshop, Explorers carved out focused time together to write biographies of biologists who inspire them. From Rosalind Franklin to Jane Goodall, learners found themselves connecting not just with the science, but with the personal stories behind the discoveries. Sitting side by side, they offered feedback, encouragement, and ideas.
